CLIMATE AND HEALTHCARE - NEW PODCAST!!

At first glance, healthcare and the NHS might not seem to be linked to the climate crisis. And doesn't the NHS have enough on it's plate at the moment without being expected to 'green' itself? This podcast episode discusses how sustainability and healthcare and inter-linked and how they impact each other, with climate action leading to healthier people and better health outcomes, and also how the healthcare system impacts on the climate.

👩‍⚕️ We can prevent 125,000 deaths (a quarter of all UK deaths) a year by meeting current climate goals

👩‍⚕️ 13% of asthma cases globally are a result of traffic fumes
Air pollution is also a significant contributor to heart disease, and also affects children's ability to learn

👩‍⚕️ A hotter, dirtier planet leads to poorer health outcomes and more deaths

👩‍⚕️ Primary care (GPs) is about 25% of the NHS, making GPs responsible for about 5.75 million tonnes CO2e

👩‍⚕️ About 60% of General Practice emissions are from medicines, 40% is from energy usage in buildings, travel, goods and services.

Covering environmental impacts on respiratory health, current respiratory care, the carbon footprint of care and how to address emissions within the respiratory reviews.

There and back again - A tale of travel footprints

We drive a lot of miles in the UK in cars and vans, and this is increasing

Air pollution damages human health in the short term

Carbon emissions contribute to the climate crisis, causing damage in the short, medium and longer term

There are a lot of positive actions which benefits individuals, the staff, and the wider community

There are multiple cobenefits of more active commuting and businesses can help facilitate this through their actions

Reducing our impact in general practice - what can we do?

What are the main sources of emissions within general practice and what role does general practice play in moving towards a zero-emissions health sector?
